Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Panama has quietly emerged as a rising star in the world of specialty coffee cultivation. This tiny but vibrant nation, known for its stunning landscapes and diverse ecosystems, has become synonymous with exceptional coffee beans. Panama’s coffee farms benefit from a unique terroir, with microclimates and varied altitudes that contribute to the production of extraordinary coffee beans. The coffee-growing regions of Boquete, Volcán, and Chiriquí Highlands, among others, offer the ideal combination of volcanic soil, rainfall, and altitude to produce coffee that’s celebrated for its complexity and flavour.

The Finca Momoto is one of the Hartmann family’s smallest farms with eight hectares of land. Here, Aliss Hartmann manages the business and oversees the coffee cultivation and processing. The Hartmann family is a second-generation coffee producer, where each member plays a pivotal role in overseeing various aspects of the farms’ operations.

In 1962, Ratibor Hartmann bought the land and turned it into a prosperous family home. Together with his wife and five children, the family owns and manages multiple farms in the area. Coffee cultivation here is a shade-grown process, with coffee plants thriving beneath the canopy of native rainforest trees that have graced the land for generations. The Hartmanns work in harmony with nature and prioritise conservation, refraining from tree cutting and actively replanting native species. Their approach is rooted in sustainability, with a commitment to preserving the environment and constant innovation. This stewardship aims to uphold the natural ecosystem, fostering healthy soil and fauna, all in service of a sustainable, long-term cycle of quality coffee production.

Expect tasting notes of jasmine, lemonade, wine gums.
