Sironko, Uganda
Regular price £14.50Sironko Station is a centralised wet mill managed by Mountain Harvest at the base of Mount Elgon. Operating as a hub for innovation and research, this station is used to process cherries from a handful of communities in the area. This is an unusual practice in Uganda where the vast majority of coffee is processed down to parchment at the farm level.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in specialty coffee production in Sironko, with some farmers adopting more advanced processing techniques to enhance the flavour and aroma of their beans. This has led to the emergence of microlots and single origin coffees from the region. From research in previous seasons, Mountain Harvest takes advantage of having full variable control during processing to produce natural and honey microlots as well as other experimental nano lots.
This natural processed microlot only produced five sacks. It comes from only two of the northernmost communities on Mount Elgon: Yilwanako-Mayiyi and Buginyanya. Many coffee farms in Sironko use traditional agroforestry systems, where coffee plants are grown under the shade of indigenous trees. This helps to regulate temperature, maintain soil moisture, and protect the coffee plants from harsh weather conditions.
Expect tasting notes of strawberry compote, tropical fruit mix, and chocolate biscuit.
