The JARC 74158 coffee variety is a native Ethiopian coffee, also known locally as Walega. It was developed through a research program by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in Ethiopia. JARC was a pioneering organisation that specialised in preserving and developing high-quality coffee varieties. This variety comes from a local landrace found in the Metu Bishari region called Krume.
74158 is the JARC catalogue number and all varieties that are denoted as 74xxx indicate that they were original landraces discovered in 1974 in the local forests. Certain varieties were generationally selected for their pronounced quality, disease resistance, yield, and other qualities that the agricultural institutions were selecting for in the 70s. Once selected for, the seed pools were propagated and sold.
Unlike other coffee-growing regions in the country, the altitude of this region is around 2,200 MASL and its coffee is referred to as a highland coffee. The coffee is grown on tiny plots of lands in Arbegona highlands, benefiting from the high altitude and bean sizes are smaller and more dense.
